Why Voice Calls on Zividax Are a Premium Feature — And Our Plan to Make Them Free
A transparent look at the real cost of real-time communication, and where we're headed next.
Introduction
When we launched voice calling on Zividax, we made a decision that some of you have asked about: voice calls are available to Premium members only.
We want to be completely open about why. This isn't a paywall designed to squeeze revenue out of a basic feature. It's an engineering and financial reality — and one we intend to change.
This article explains exactly how our calling system works, what it costs us to keep it running, and the roadmap we've committed to in order to make voice calls free for everyone.
The Technology Behind Zividax Calls
Real-time voice communication is fundamentally different from messaging. When you send a text message, it travels to our server, gets stored in a database, and is delivered the next time the recipient's app checks in. That's cheap. A message can sit for hours and cost us virtually nothing.
A voice call is the opposite. It requires:
-
A continuous, bidirectional audio stream between two devices
-
Latency under ~200ms — anything slower and the conversation feels unnatural
-
Global edge infrastructure — the audio has to enter the network close to the caller and exit close to the receiver
-
NAT traversal and TURN relays for users behind restrictive networks
-
99.9%+ uptime, because a dropped call is far more damaging than a delayed message
Building and operating that infrastructure is a specialist discipline. Rather than ship a fragile, self-built calling system that would disappoint you, we integrated with Agora — one of the world's leading real-time engagement platforms, used by major apps across the globe.
Agora gives us carrier-grade voice quality on day one. It also comes with a price tag that scales directly with how much you talk.
What Calls Actually Cost Us
This is the part most users never see. Agora bills on a per-thousand-minute basis. Every single minute of every single call — inbound, outbound, connected, or ringing — is metered.
Now consider what that means at scale:
| Scenario | Monthly Minutes | Cost Impact |
|---|---|---|
| 100 users × 10 min/day | ~30,000 minutes | Manageable |
| 1,000 users × 10 min/day | ~300,000 minutes | Significant |
| 10,000 users × 10 min/day | ~3,000,000 minutes | Unsustainable without revenue |
The critical characteristic here is that cost scales linearly with usage and is completely independent of revenue. Messaging infrastructure can be optimized, cached, compressed, and batched. A live voice call cannot. Two people talking for ten minutes consume ten minutes of paid, real-time, global network capacity — every single time.
If we opened voice calling to every registered user tomorrow, a single viral moment could produce a bill large enough to threaten the platform's survival. That's not a hypothetical fear; it's the standard failure mode for communication apps that offer expensive real-time features for free before they have the infrastructure to absorb the load.
Why We Chose Premium Instead of Compromises
We had three options:
-
Offer free calls and degrade quality — add ads, cap call length, reduce audio fidelity, or queue connections. We rejected this. A bad call experience is worse than no call feature at all, and it would permanently damage trust in the Zividax brand.
-
Delay calling indefinitely — wait until we could afford to build our own infrastructure. We rejected this too. Our users needed voice calling now, and we had a way to deliver it at full quality.
-
Ship premium-quality calling to Premium members, and reinvest that revenue into the path toward free calling. This is what we chose.
Every Premium subscription directly funds the real-time minutes you use. It's a fair exchange: members who need calling most help cover the cost of the infrastructure that makes it possible, without compromising quality for anyone.
What Premium Members Get
Voice calling on Zividax is not a stripped-down or limited edition. Premium members receive:
-
Full-quality, low-latency voice calls powered by Agora's global network
-
Unlimited call duration — no artificial caps
-
Global reach — call any Zividax user, anywhere, with the same experience
-
Call history integrated into your chat timeline, so your conversations stay in one place
-
Missed-call notifications and call-back shortcuts
-
End-to-end encrypted messaging alongside your calls, unchanged
We'd rather offer an excellent paid feature than a mediocre free one. That principle won't change.
The Roadmap: Free Calls for Everyone
This is the commitment we want to make publicly.
Zividax voice calling will become free for all users once we move to our own media server infrastructure.
Here's what that transition involves:
Phase 1 — Growth and Validation (current)
Premium calling continues on Agora. We use this period to understand real usage patterns: peak hours, average call length, geographic distribution, and concurrency. This data is essential — building infrastructure without it would mean guessing.
Phase 2 — Self-Hosted Media Infrastructure
We begin deploying our own WebRTC stack — an SFU (Selective Forwarding Unit) for multi-party routing, plus dedicated STUN/TURN servers distributed across regions. This is a substantial engineering effort, but it removes per-minute licensing costs entirely. After this point, our marginal cost per call becomes bandwidth and server capacity, not vendor minutes.
Phase 3 — Migration and Free Rollout
Once our servers demonstrate stability at scale, we migrate users off Agora and remove the Premium requirement from voice calls.
The threshold
We're not attaching a fixed user number to this — it depends on concurrency, not registrations. What we can say clearly is this: the more people use Zividax, the faster free calling arrives. Growth is what makes self-hosted infrastructure economically viable, and growth is what funds it.
What Doesn't Change
-
Your messages remain end-to-end encrypted. Premium status has no bearing on privacy.
-
Messaging, media sharing, and groups stay free. Voice calling is the only feature gated by Premium for cost reasons.
-
No ads will be introduced to fund calls. We're not trading your attention for minutes.
-
Premium members will not lose access. When calls become free, existing Premium members retain every other benefit of their subscription.
A Note on Transparency
We could have written "Premium feature" next to the call button and left it at that. Most apps do.
We're choosing to explain the economics instead, because we think you deserve to know where your subscription goes and what it's building toward. Real-time communication is genuinely expensive. Pretending otherwise — by shipping a free feature that quietly degrades, or by hiding costs behind vague limitations — would be dishonest.
Premium calling is a bridge, not a destination.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will calls ever be free?
Yes. Once we operate our own media servers, the Premium requirement will be removed.
Why not build your own servers now?
Self-hosted real-time infrastructure requires substantial engineering resources, global server presence, and validated usage data. Building it prematurely risks a poor calling experience — which defeats the purpose.
Does my Premium subscription fund anything else?
Yes — it supports the platform's overall development, including the infrastructure work described above.
Will call quality change when calls become free?
No. Our own infrastructure is being designed to match or exceed current quality, with lower latency and no vendor-imposed limits.
Can I try calling before subscribing?
Premium is available at zividax.uk/premium_account, where you can review current plans and features.
Closing
Voice calling on Zividax exists because we refused to ship something half-built. It's Premium-only because real-time audio costs real money — money that scales with every minute you speak.
But that's a stage, not a business model.
Our goal has always been the same: build the infrastructure ourselves, remove the cost barrier, and make calling free for everyone. Every Premium subscription moves us closer to that day.
Thank you for being part of it.
